ECB Touts Digital Euro as Private Payment Option
The European Central Bank (ECB) is designing the digital euro to offer stronger privacy protections than traditional cash, according to ECB Executive Board member Piero Cipollone. In an interview published on August 24, Cipollone emphasized that the digital euro would provide a high level of privacy while complementing cash rather than replacing it.
The digital euro is expected to support both online and offline payments across the euro area. For offline transactions, transaction details would only be available to the payer and payee, ensuring maximum anonymity. In contrast, for online payments, the Eurosystem would not be able to identify individuals making or receiving digital euro payments.
Only banks involved in transactions would be able to identify customers, including where required for anti-money laundering purposes. Cipollone stated that the digital euro is designed to provide greater privacy protection than conventional bank transfers, while offering the highest level of privacy currently possible with available technology.
