ECB Under Fire: Renewed Political Pressure Mounts Amid Eurozone Debt Crisis
Central Bank Pressure Index (CBPI) analysis suggests renewed political pressure on the European Central Bank (ECB) as France and Italy's debt strains mount. The index, built from AI analysis of politicians' statements, points to recurring attempts by senior politicians to influence the ECB.
The indicator reveals that demands on the ECB were scarce in recent years due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the energy price shock linked to the war in Ukraine. However, with rising interest costs and limited consolidation, debt already stands at 120% of GDP in France and 130% in Italy, a backdrop that could again politicise monetary policy and constrain the ECB.
As yields rise, politicians are pushing the ECB to keep interest rates low to ease borrowing costs. This mounting friction is expected to severely test the central bank's independence in the coming weeks, especially as inflation risks linger.
