ECB Unveils Blockchain-Ready Euro Reserves Amid Stablecoin Debate
The European Central Bank (ECB) is making significant strides in digitizing its euro reserves. In an effort to bring central bank money onto blockchain, Project Pontes is set to launch in September, connecting market DLT platforms to TARGET Services and adding a Eurosystem-operated ledger for central bank money.
The project, which has been in development since 2024 when €1.6B was settled through six months of trials with 64 participants across nine jurisdictions, aims to make euro reserves native programmable assets for tokenized financial markets. This move is part of the ECB's plan to bring central bank money directly onto distributed ledgers.
ECB Executive Board member Isabel Schnabel emphasized that stablecoins can be useful for digital payments but should not replace central bank reserves as the ultimate settlement asset. She argued that 'stablecoins are best understood as complements to central bank money, not substitutes for it.'
