ECB Unveils Final Euro Banknote Designs Featuring Culture and Nature Themes
The European Central Bank (ECB) has unveiled ten final design proposals for future euro banknotes, each featuring themes of culture and nature. Over 1,200 submissions were considered, with two main themes emerging: European culture and the richness of nature.
The new designs aim to reflect the identity of the continent, moving away from the fictional bridges, doors, and windows featured on the current euro banknotes. The first option highlights European culture, featuring scientists and artists such as Maria Skłodowska-Curie and Ludwig van Beethoven on one side, while the back features everyday aspects of European culture like choirs, libraries, or town squares.
The second option showcases beautiful birds and rivers on the front, with the back featuring buildings of EU institutions. The ECB has scheduled the new banknotes to enter circulation from the end of 2026.
