ECB Unveils Futuristic Designs for Next Euro Banknotes

The European Central Bank has unveiled proposals for new designs of euro banknotes. The new designs feature different colour schemes and themes, including culture and nature. What stands out is the idea of 'drawn' and stylised banknotes that resemble mini-posters or reproductions of Futurist paintings.

Over 1,200 graphic designers submitted entries for the new designs, but only 25 were selected to develop proposals on one or both of the chosen themes. The ECB is now launching a public survey to let European citizens choose what they want to hold in their hands.

The presentation of the final designs marks the culmination of a process that has seen significant engagement from designers and the public. Voting will be open until September 21, after which the ECB's Governing Council will make its final decision towards the end of the year.

Once the new designs are approved, they will undergo further development and pre-production testing before being made available for circulation in the years that follow. The new euro banknotes will feature enhanced security features to make them easier to recognise and access, including for people with visual impairments.
