ECB Unveils New Euro Banknote Designs for Public Comment
The European Central Bank (ECB) is inviting the public to comment on new designs for euro banknotes. The designs, which feature historical figures and cultural sites from across Europe, aim to reflect the continent's rich cultural heritage.
The ECB has submitted ten designs for public consultation until September 21st. The potential banknote designs include American-Greek opera singer Maria Callas, German composer Beethoven, French-Polish scientist Marie Curie-Skłodowska, and Austrian pacifist Bertha von Suttner.
The reverse of the banknotes features European cultural sites such as libraries, universities, and city squares. A design variant featuring rivers and birds has also been created for nature lovers.
ECB President Christine Lagarde said that euro banknotes are 'one of the most tangible expressions of Europe.' The Governing Council will consider a technical assessment, survey results, and a design jury's decision before making a final choice by the end of the year.
