ECB Unveils New Euro Banknote Designs with Public Consultation

The European Central Bank (ECB) has unveiled ten possible designs for the next generation of euro banknotes, marking the first complete redesign since they were introduced in 2002. The proposed designs are based on two themes: 'European culture' and 'Rivers and birds.'

Over 1,200 designers submitted entries to an ECB-wide competition across the European Union, with 25 shortlisted to develop proposals for one or both themes.

An independent jury of experts in graphic design, communications, neuroscience, and history selected the final ten designs, which will now be put to a public consultation. The ECB's Governing Council has launched an online survey covering all ten proposals, which will remain open until September 21, 2026.
