ECB Unveils Redesigned Banknotes to Showcase European Culture

The European Central Bank (ECB) is revamping its banknotes to better represent Europe's culture and values. The current notes, introduced in 2002 with a facelift in 2013, feature generic architectural styles but lack personality. ECB President Christine Lagarde wants the new designs to showcase the continent's heritage.

The two shortlisted options are: one featuring beautiful birds and rivers on the front, with EU buildings hidden on the reverse; and another highlighting great scientists and artists like Maria Sklodowska Curie and Ludwig van Beethoven, along with everyday cultural scenes on the back. The ECB has invited public feedback on ten sets of designs.

Some creative suggestions have emerged from social media, including images of disused border barriers, an open plastic bottle with a cap, or even a note bearing half a dozen famous faces, Britain's prime ministers since Brexit.
