ECB Unveils Redesigned Euro Banknotes with Focus on Culture and Nature

The European Central Bank (ECB) is embarking on a major overhaul of euro banknotes, marking the first complete redesign since the currency's debut in 2002. The initiative involves ten shortlisted designs that showcase a fresh take on currency, with two distinct themes: European culture and Rivers and birds.

The European culture theme features portraits of notable figures such as Maria Callas, Beethoven, and Marie Curie, highlighting their contributions to the continent's rich cultural heritage. Designers have employed various techniques, including expressive facial details and abstract depictions, to bring these icons to life on the banknotes.

The Rivers and birds theme captures nature through a journey from mountain streams to the sea, with specific birds featured on each denomination. This theme reflects a combination of natural and bureaucratic elements, as European institutions are paired with avian imagery.

European citizens have an opportunity to participate in the banknote redesign by exploring the shortlisted designs through an online survey available until September 21, 2026. The public input will feed into the ECB's broader evaluation, alongside a technical assessment and a jury's critique.
