The European Central Bank (ECB) has unveiled ten shortlisted design proposals for the next series of euro banknotes. The designs are based on two themes: 'European culture' and 'Rivers and birds'.

The ECB invited graphic designers to submit their proposals, and over 1,200 applications were received. An independent jury selected ten designs, which will be put to a public survey.

The public survey, open until September 21st, invites Europeans to provide feedback on the design proposals. The results of both the public survey and an independent research company's survey will be used by the ECB to inform their final decision.

The new banknotes are expected to enter circulation in subsequent years, with the first complete redesign since their issuance in 2002. The ECB aims to reduce the environmental footprint of the banknotes through enhanced durability and more sustainable materials.
