ECB Unveils Shortlisted Designs for New Euro Banknotes

The European Central Bank (ECB) has unveiled ten shortlisted designs for the next series of euro banknotes, which will be put to a public vote. The proposals follow two themes: 'European culture' and 'Rivers and birds'. Five designs feature historical figures such as Maria Callas, Ludwig van Beethoven, Marie Curie, Miguel de Cervantes, Leonardo da Vinci, and Bertha von Suttner on the front of the notes.

The reverse sides show cultural and leisure scenes, while the other five designs feature European bird species set against river landscapes. The ECB's Governing Council will decide on the winning design by the end of the year, taking into account the results of two surveys: one among euro area citizens and another among a representative sample.

ECB President Christine Lagarde said that the new banknotes will 'reinforce a shared European identity' and combine beauty and meaning. The redesign is part of an effort to keep cash secure and efficient, while preserving access to public money and the freedom to choose how to pay.
