ECB Unveils Shortlisted Euro Banknote Designs Amid Public Feedback Push
The European Central Bank (ECB) has unveiled ten shortlisted design proposals for the next series of euro banknotes. The designs are based on two themes: 'European culture' and 'Rivers and birds'. Christine Lagarde, ECB President, said that euro banknotes are more than just a means of payment, they represent one of the most tangible expressions of Europe.
The shortlisted proposals were chosen from over 1,200 applications received from graphic designers. An independent jury composed of experts in different fields selected the top ten designs. The public is now invited to provide their feedback through an online survey, which will remain open until September 21st, 2026.
The ECB's Governing Council will take the final decision on the new banknote design around the end of the year, combining inputs from the Design Contest Jury, technical assessment, and the results of the surveys. The selected design will then undergo further development and testing before going into production.
