ECB's Digital Euro App Exceeds Accessibility Law Requirements
The European Central Bank (ECB) has announced its digital euro application will exceed European accessibility law requirements, making it more inclusive for users.
The app aims to provide a public and digital payment option throughout the eurozone, complementing cash payments. It will feature improved visual design, full keyboard navigation, screen reader support, and end-of-session alerts. The ECB also promises simplified language, error prevention mechanisms, and animation reduction settings.
The 12-month pilot for the digital euro app is scheduled to start in the second half of 2027 with 36 payment providers participating. This test will precede any final issuance decision and will be a key factor in convincing users that the digital euro complements cash without opening the door to mass surveillance.
