The European Central Bank (ECB) is developing a digital euro application that will serve as a backup when bank apps fail. The application, expected to be launched in the second half of 2027, will provide users with a fallback option if their bank's app is unavailable or doesn't support all required functions.

The ECB has selected 36 payment service providers to participate in a 12-month pilot test scheduled to begin in 2027. The participants will examine how the proposed system works, including accessibility features that exceed the requirements of the European Accessibility Act.

The digital euro application is designed to provide users with enhanced visual design, full keyboard navigation, and support for screen readers used by people with visual impairments. It will also include warnings before sessions time out, simplified language, tools designed to prevent user errors, and settings that reduce motion and animation.
