The European Central Bank's (ECB) decision to maintain interest rates at current levels but retain the option of a rate hike in September has bolstered the euro against the U.S. dollar.

This 'hawkish hold' saw policymakers keep all three key interest rates unchanged, including the deposit facility rate at 2.25%, the main refinancing rate at 2.40%, and the marginal lending facility rate at 2.65%.

However, both the wording of the policy statement and ECB President Lagarde's press conference delivered clear hawkish signals, with her emphasizing that officials remain highly vigilant about the risk of a 'second-round inflationary shock' triggered by rising energy prices via wage negotiations and corporate pricing behavior.

Markets responded swiftly to this signal, pricing in a roughly 95% probability of a 25-basis-point rate hike in September, with the likelihood of another hike in December also elevated.
