Economy Class Gets a Major Upgrade: Airlines Offer Lie-Flat Beds at Affordable Prices

Airlines are blurring the lines between economy and business class by offering lie-flat beds at a fraction of the cost. Six airlines - Air New Zealand, Lufthansa, All Nippon Airways (ANA), Vietnam Airlines, Air Astana, and United - have introduced products that allow passengers to turn three or more economy seats into a bed or near-flat sleeping surface.

These products cater to travelers facing long-haul flights of 11-17 hours. By paying extra for a row of economy seats, passengers can enjoy a better night's sleep without the hefty price tag of a business-class ticket.

Air New Zealand's Skycouch remains the benchmark, introduced in 2011 as the first economy seat that could be converted into a bed. However, other airlines have since caught up with their own versions of lie-flat beds.

Among these, Air Astana's Economy Sleeper class stands out for its generous benefits. Passengers can enjoy priority check-in and boarding, access to business lounges, a higher baggage allowance, and bonus loyalty miles credited at 125% of the flown distance. The seats also come with a fully changeable and refundable ticket.

While Air Astana's Economy Sleeper is available on only a handful of international services, it offers more business-class overlap for the money than any other product on this list.
