ECOWAS Unveils 2027 Deadline for ECO, a Common Currency for Over 400 Million
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has reaffirmed its commitment to launching the ECO, a common regional currency, in 2027. The ECO aims to create one currency, one market, and a seamless trading environment for over 400 million people across the sub-region.
Despite repeated postponements since its conception in the 1980s, regional leaders believe that 2027 is not just another deadline, but a necessary economic imperative. ECOWAS estimates that intra-regional trade remains significantly below its potential despite decades of integration efforts.
The introduction of the ECO promises to reduce transaction costs, improve price transparency, and encourage investment flows across member states. Economists argue that monetary unions offer significant economic advantages when properly implemented, citing the European Union's Euro as a successful example.
