Education Tied to Wealth: Fed Data Shows Strong Correlation
A new analysis of household finances by the Federal Reserve reveals that educational attainment is closely tied to wealth accumulation. The central bank's data shows a clear pattern: as education levels rise, so does median net worth. Households led by individuals without a high school diploma had a median net worth of $38,050 in 2022, while those with only a high school diploma had $107,000.
The largest leap occurred among college graduates, whose median net worth stood at $464,400. When measured by average net worth, the gap widens further: college-educated households averaged nearly $2 million in 2022, compared to roughly $413,300 for high school graduates.
The disparity is not solely about higher salaries; college graduates are more likely to own assets that build wealth over time, such as real estate and retirement accounts. For instance, nearly three-quarters of college graduates owned their primary residence in 2022, compared with 62% of high school graduates.
