Egyptian Pound Strengthens Against Dollar, Euro Amid Regional Uncertainty
The Egyptian pound has strengthened against both the US dollar and euro in trading at the end of August, according to reports from various banks. At the National Bank of Egypt, the dollar was quoted at EGP 50.17 for buying and EGP 50.27 for selling, mirroring similar rates reported by Banque Misr.
The move comes as international financial institutions continue to assess Egypt's external position amidst regional uncertainty surrounding shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
A report from US investment bank Morgan Stanley outlined three potential economic scenarios for the period ahead, closely linked to developments in global oil prices and navigation through the Strait. Under a favorable scenario, Brent crude would fall to around $65 a barrel during the second half of 2026 and $60 in 2027.
The International Monetary Fund has also emphasized the importance of exchange-rate flexibility in helping Egypt absorb external shocks, describing the exchange rate as the main instrument that helped the country respond to regional tensions.
