Eight Million Europeans Weigh in on New Euro Banknote Design
Over eight million people have participated in the public consultation on the future design of euro banknotes, said Doris Schneeberger, Director of the Banknotes Directorate at the European Central Bank (ECB). This is a significant increase from two weeks ago, when over six million participants were reported. The current series of euro banknotes has been in circulation for more than 20 years.
The ECB is preparing the first comprehensive redesign of euro banknotes since their introduction. The new design will feature advanced security elements to make counterfeiting more difficult and authentication easier. Additionally, improvements will be made for people with visual impairments, including distinctive colors, different banknote sizes, and tactile markings resembling Braille.
The two themes that have reached the final stage of the process are 'European Culture' and 'Rivers and Birds.' These were selected following recommendations by an independent expert group and a public consultation in 2023. The Governing Council will take into account the results of the public consultations, the assessment by the design competition jury, and technical requirements when making a decision.
The final design is expected to be announced towards the end of 2026. Production preparations and testing will then begin, and it will take several years before the first banknotes of the new series reach the public. According to Schneeberger, access to cash remains important for financial inclusion, privacy, and the resilience of the payment system.
