El Niño Sparks Commodity Price Surge, Boosts Mining Sector
A strengthening El Niño weather phenomenon is expected to impact global commodity markets, potentially disrupting production and driving up prices. Global oceans have recorded their highest temperatures, signaling a powerful 'super' El Niño event that could persist into 2027.
The Reserve Bank of Australia may face challenges in battling inflation as a result, according to State Street Investment Management's Krishna Bhimavarapu, who suggests rising food prices could slow disinflation and add uncertainty. This may necessitate further cash rate increases, with markets pricing a 50 per cent chance of another hike by Christmas.
Australia's mining sector, however, could benefit from the disruption to global production. Datt Capital notes that lithium supply disruptions from South America's 'lithium triangle', Argentina, Chile, and Bolivia, could materially benefit Australian hardrock lithium producers like PLS, Mineral Resources, and Liontown Resources.
