Electric Vehicles Fuel Economic Growth Amid High Fuel Prices

Australians are switching to electric and hybrid vehicles in record numbers due to high fuel prices. According to Michele Bullock, Reserve Bank governor, petrol prices have been a significant concern for many households, making up about 3 per cent of an Australian household's spending.

As fuel prices remain relatively high at around $2 a litre after the government's fuel excise discount ended in August, Australians are looking for ways to save money. Electric and hybrid vehicle sales have been on the rise, with nearly one in every two vehicles sold across April, May, and June being either electric or hybrid.

Record sales of electric and hybrid vehicles were driven by growing proof of their reliability and increasing affordability, thanks in part to government subsidies for EV purchases. Fully electric vehicles now make up a fifth of new car sales compared to one-eighth six months ago.

The trend is expected to have a significant impact on the broader economy, with household spending making up roughly half of our total economy. While economic growth has been trundling along at around 2 per cent annually, the increased demand for electric and hybrid vehicles could contribute to higher prices and interest rates in the short term.

However, as electricity prices can fluctuate, the uptake of solar and renewable energy generation has put many Australian households in a better position when it comes to energy costs. In the long term, electric and hybrid vehicles are expected to be deflationary, helping to put downward pressure on energy prices.
