Employment Numbers Surprise: NFP Surges Amid Revisions
The latest employment numbers from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) have surprised economists and market watchers alike. The data, released in August 2026, showed a significant surge in both nonfarm payroll employment (NFP) and civilian employment with smoothed population controls.
According to Figure 1, which compares various economic indicators, NFP employment increased by a substantial amount, while industrial production and personal income also rose. Meanwhile, manufacturing and trade sales in constant 2017 dollars remained steady.
The BLS data revealed not only a strong increase in employment but also revisions to previous months' numbers. Figure 3 shows the change in private nonfarm payroll employment from August's release compared to July's, with the ADP estimate also showing a significant increase.
The surge in employment has important implications for the economy and financial markets. A strong labor market can support consumer spending and business investment, which in turn can drive economic growth.
