Energy Price Spikes Threaten UK Winter Economy

Instruments

Share

The British economy is facing a winter squeeze as gas prices surge to their highest level since 2022, driven by conflict in the Middle East and low storage levels.

Gas prices have more than doubled this year, and oil prices are also on the rise. Brent crude settled at about $104 per barrel last week, up from around $96 a week earlier.

The UK is particularly exposed to higher gas prices due to its low storage capacity and reliance on imported gas when renewable sources cannot meet demand.

As energy prices climb, the Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee may be pressured to hike interest rates further, adding to economic headwinds. Government borrowing costs have also risen, with 10-year and 30-year gilt yields hitting new multi-decade highs.
