EU Citizens to Decide Fate of Euro Banknotes in Radical Design Overhaul

The European Central Bank (ECB) has proposed a radical change to the visual concept of the euro currency, introducing new designs for banknotes that reflect the cultural and natural heritage of Europe.

A competition among 1,200 graphic designers yielded 10 independent concepts, which are now being put to a public vote. Until September 21, 2026, citizens of the EU can choose from two main themes: one focused on famous figures from art, science, and literature, and another highlighting European birds and rivers.

The design featuring European birds against a backdrop of rivers has gained attention for its emphasis on natural diversity. Among the proposed concepts are illustrations of six bird species, including the wallcreeper, kingfisher, bee-eater, white stork, pied avocet, and northern gannet.

The ECB's proposal aims to introduce a new perspective on European identity, shifting from a focus on history and achievements to a consideration of the continent's water and natural resources. The winning design will be announced at the end of 2026, with new banknotes expected to enter circulation in 2029.
