EU Digital Euro App Prioritizes Accessibility

The European Central Bank (ECB) has outlined its plans for the digital euro app, which will prioritize accessibility and inclusion. The app's design includes features such as enhanced visual design, full keyboard navigation, screen reader support, time-out warnings, simplified language, error prevention, and reduced motion settings.

The ECB says that the digital euro will be a public good, accessible to all Europeans on equal terms. This aligns with the European Commission's legislative proposal, which aims to ensure everyone has access to the digital euro app. The ECB is working closely with consumer organizations, accessibility experts, and national central banks to develop the app.

The digital euro app will be tested during a pilot launch in 2027. Users can also access basic digital euro services through channels offered by their payment service providers, which would remain the main point of contact for end users.
