EU Faces Existential Crisis as Rhine Group Seeks Reforms
The European Union is facing an existential crisis, and a new initiative called the Rhine Group aims to address its economic and political stagnation.
Co-founded by Mario Draghi, former Italian Prime Minister and President of the European Central Bank, and Patrick Collison, CEO of Stripe, the group brings together financiers, industrialists, academics, and other senior figures to push for reforms.
Their mission is to help Europe compete with Chinese competition, Russian aggression, and American disengagement. They emphasize that if Europe continues to stagnate, it will lose its ability to fund core state obligations such as defense, public healthcare, pensions, education, climate investments, and safety nets for those who lose their jobs.
The Rhine Group's warning is underscored by the EU's growing role in defending against Russian hegemony. However, the EU has no armed forces, collective nuclear deterrent, or ability to make security decisions independently of its member states.
