EUR/GBP Steady Amid UK Unemployment Data
The EUR/GBP exchange rate held steady around 0.8550 in early European trading hours on Tuesday, despite some volatility following the release of UK unemployment data.
The Office for National Statistics reported that the UK Unemployment Rate remained at 4.9% in the three months to June, exceeding market expectations of a decline to 4.8%. Meanwhile, the number of people claiming jobless benefits decreased by 11K in July, contrasting with revised estimates and market forecasts.
The employment data had an immediate impact on the British Pound, causing it to edge lower against the Euro. Analysts attribute this movement to the UK's interest rate hike expectations, which currently stand at a 25 basis points increase by the end of 2026, according to Reuters.
On the other hand, the Euro continues to benefit from its economic resilience, as reflected in Scotiabank analysts' views. They attribute the recent firming trend in the EUR to this resilience despite headwinds from energy prices.
