EUR/JPY Slumps as German Inflation Fails to Lift Rally Amid Middle East Tensions
The EUR/JPY currency pair retreated from its earlier gains on Wednesday as market sentiment turned risk-averse amid rising tensions in the Middle East. The pair dipped to around 183.50 after briefly pushing above 184.00, with Germany's July Harmonized Index of Consumer Prices (HICP) accelerating to a 2.8% year-over-year rate.
The rise in energy prices drove the headline increase, with energy inflation jumping to 7.3% in the 12 months to July. Core HICP also edged higher, rising to 2.6% year-over-year from 2.5% in June. These readings reinforce expectations that the European Central Bank (ECB) may raise interest rates in September.
However, the immediate impact on the Euro was limited, as the currency continues to struggle against major counterparts. The Japanese Yen trimmed losses against major currencies, supported by a more hawkish tilt in recent Bank of Japan communications. A Summary of Opinions released earlier in the week showed a tone that market participants perceived as leaning toward tighter policy.
