EUR/USD Breakout Imminent as ECB Decision and Inflation Data Loom
The EUR/USD pair remains trapped in a tight range ahead of Thursday's European Central Bank (ECB) decision and key inflation data from the United States. The range is driven by front-end rates, with the ECB's September rate hike fully priced and a second move heavily favored for December.
However, the tone of the policy statement, President Christine Lagarde's press conference, and updated forecasts from ECB staff may determine how EUR/USD fares following the rate decision. The pair's correlation matrix shows a strong relationship with both German-US 2-year yield spreads and outright yields.
The recent economic data surprises have underpinned the front-end rates influence, with the euro area data outperforming expectations by considerably more than the United States. Implied pricing from swaps now essentially fully prices a move at the ECB's September meeting.
