EUR/USD Rangebound Ahead of Critical Policy Decisions
The EUR/USD exchange rate is navigating a delicate balance as market participants digest a mix of US economic strength and Eurozone inflation pressures. Despite a robust jobs report in August, which showed 162,000 jobs added nearly triple the forecasted 55,000, the dollar's rally stalled.
US Treasury yields climbed, particularly in short-term maturities, reflecting the market's anticipation of tighter monetary policy. However, the DXY retreated from above 99.36 to around 99.10, signaling a lack of conviction among traders to sustain the dollar's strength at these levels.
The euro's resilience is underpinned by expectations that the European Central Bank (ECB) will deliver a 25 basis point rate increase to 2.50% at its policy meeting on September 10. Eurozone annual inflation accelerated to 3.3% in August, up from 2.9% in July, largely driven by surging energy prices.
Market participants are pricing in this ECB hike almost fully, with the euro's recent strength reflecting confidence that the central bank will act decisively to contain inflation. However, some analysts caution that the ECB may pause after September if second-round inflation effects remain contained.
