Euro Area Inflation Data Reveals Muted Core Momentum
The European Central Bank is keeping a close eye on inflation in the euro area as national data reveals muted core momentum. Flash inflation data for August shows that underlying inflation pressures remain contained, with core inflation either declining or unchanged.
In France and Spain, headline inflation was broadly as expected, while Germany's print came in slightly lower than anticipated. Core inflation, which strips out volatile food and energy prices, remained steady at 2.4% year-over-year in all three countries.
This suggests that the energy price shock has not yet spilled over to underlying inflation, with core inflation momentum continuing to be muted.
