Euro Area Inflation Surges to 2.9%
The Euro area's inflation rate has increased to 2.9% in July, exceeding expectations of 2.8%. This is a slight rise from June's estimate, but core annual inflation has also seen a significant jump to 2.5%, up from 2.4% previously.
The breakdown of the data shows that food prices have increased by 1.2%, while energy prices have surged by 10.0%. Services inflation has risen to 3.3%, marking a moderate increase over June's estimate.
Notably, both energy and service prices saw significant monthly jumps, with energy prices increasing by 2.4% and service prices rising by 1.1%. Food prices remained flat in July.
This trend suggests that the European Central Bank (ECB) may need to reassess its stance on interest rates when it returns from summer break. Market traders are currently pricing in around 66% odds of a rate hike in September, with further hikes expected in the coming months.
