Euro Area Inflation Surges to 3.3% as ECB Rate Hike Looms

Headline inflation in the euro area rose to 3.3% in August from 2.9% in July, primarily driven by higher energy prices linked to the Middle East conflict.

This increase brings the headline rate further away from the ECB's 2% target and aligns with the bank's staff projections, which foresee two interest rate hikes.

Commerzbank's Dr. Vincent Stamer notes that many businesses will likely pass on higher energy costs to consumers in the coming months, particularly in manufacturing and food production sectors.

This is expected to push core inflation significantly higher over the next year.
