Euro Area Inflation Surges to Highest Since 2023 on Energy Costs
The euro area's inflation rate is expected to reach its highest level since 2023 this month, putting pressure on policymakers to raise interest rates. According to a Bloomberg survey of 31 forecasts, consumer prices in the euro area rose by 3.3% from a year earlier in August, up from 2.9% in July.
The increase is driven primarily by energy costs, which are being exacerbated by ongoing Middle East tensions. Germany and Italy's inflation rates are also expected to surge this month, with forecasts predicting similar quickening in these countries.
This development adds to the challenges facing policymakers as they attempt to balance economic growth with rising prices.
