Euro Area M3 Growth Rises, Corporate Deposits Surge in June
The European Central Bank (ECB) has released its report on monetary developments in the euro area for June 2026, revealing some key trends and shifts in the financial landscape.
The broad monetary aggregate M3 grew at an annual rate of 3.3% in June, up from 3.0% in May. This average growth rate over the past three months remains stable at 3.0%. Breaking down M3, we see that the narrower aggregate M1, which includes currency in circulation and overnight deposits, saw its annual growth rate decrease to 3.4% in June from 3.7% in May.
In contrast, short-term deposits other than overnight deposits (M2-M1) increased their annual growth rate to 2.8% in June from 1.4% in May. Marketable instruments (M3-M2) saw a jump to 4.5% in June from 3.2% in May.
Looking at the holding sectors of deposits in M3, household deposits placed decreased to 2.6% annual growth rate in June from 2.8% in May. On the other hand, non-financial corporations saw a rise in their annual growth rate to 5.3% in June from 4.2% in May.
The ECB's report also highlights that the annual growth rate of total claims on euro area residents remained unchanged at 2.4% in June. Claims on general government increased to 0.3% in June from 0.1% in May, while claims on the private sector held steady at 3.3%. The adjusted loans to the private sector grew at a rate of 3.9%, with households at 3.0% and non-financial corporations at 4.0%
