Euro Banknote Redesign Enters Public Voting Phase

The European Central Bank (ECB) has unveiled ten possible designs for the next generation of euro banknotes, and is allowing the public to vote on their favorite design. The options are grouped around two themes: birds and people and symbols that represent Europe's cultural heritage.

Members of the public can cast their ballots until September, with the ECB set to make its final pick at the end of 2026. Once a decision is made, the new notes will not appear in wallets and tills until several years later. The outcome will determine what Europeans see in their wallets for years to come.

The shortlist includes opera legend Maria Callas as one of the cultural figures featured on the banknotes. While some people are backing the wildlife options, others are championing the historical figures. The level of involvement suggests that the public is genuinely invested in shaping what future euro notes will look like.
