Euro Banknote Redesign Features Legendary Soprano Maria Callas
The European Central Bank has announced its final design proposals for the next generation of euro banknotes, and among them is a €5 note featuring legendary Greek soprano Maria Callas.
As part of their long-term strategy to keep cash secure, accessible, and relevant in an increasingly digital economy, the ECB has selected ten shortlisted proposals based on two themes: 'European Culture' and 'Rivers and Birds.'
The €5 banknote featuring Maria Callas is part of the cultural series, which celebrates iconic Europeans whose contributions have shaped the continent's artistic and cultural heritage.
Maria Callas (1923-1977) was a widely regarded Greek-American singer who transformed operatic performance through her extraordinary vocal range and dramatic interpretations, leaving a lasting influence on opera and classical music.
