Euro Banknote Redesign Pits Culture Against Nature
The European Central Bank (ECB) has unveiled two competing design themes for new euro banknotes, which will be introduced in 2027. The designs were presented by ECB President Christine Lagarde and feature vibrant colors and a modern visual style. Citizens can now vote between cultural icons and natural landscapes, with the final choice shaping the look of European currency.
The two competing design themes are 'Cultura Europea: espacios culturales compartidos' (European Culture: Shared Cultural Spaces) and 'Ríos y Aves: resiliencia en la diversidad' (Rivers and Birds: Resilience in Diversity). The cultural theme features portraits of historic personalities who shaped the continent, while the nature-themed series displays birds set against river landscapes.
The ECB is inviting citizens to participate in a public consultation, which runs until September 21. While the public vote is influential, it will not be the sole factor in the final decision. The new notes will reflect both the diversity and shared identity of Europe.
