Euro Banknote Redesign Vote Open Until Mid-September
The European Central Bank (ECB) has launched a public vote to decide on the design of new euro banknotes, set to be released in 2026. The redesign aims to strengthen the shared identity of Europeans through designs that combine beauty and meaning.
A 2023 survey received over 365,000 responses, with two themes emerging: European birds and rivers, or iconic figures from European culture. Designers submitted over 1,200 proposals, and a jury selected 25 artists to create the shortlist of ten designs for each theme.
The new euro banknotes will feature either portraits of major European figures on the culture theme, or images of European birds in natural settings on the birds and rivers theme. The ECB's President, Christine Lagarde, called the redesign a chance to strengthen shared identity.
