Euro Banknotes Get Makeover Options: Vote Now for Your Favorite Design
The European Central Bank (ECB) has unveiled ten new design options for euro banknotes, which the public can vote on until September 21. The designs are based around two themes: 'European culture: shared cultural spaces' and 'Rivers and birds: resilience in diversity'.
Four of the options feature vertical banknotes, a departure from the traditional horizontal design. The ECB's President, Christine Lagarde, said that euro banknotes are 'more than a means of payment, they are one of the most tangible expressions of Europe.' She added that the new designs will 'reinforce our shared identity' through their combination of beauty and meaning.
The current theme of the euro banknotes is 'Ages and styles', featuring motifs based on architectural styles from various periods in Europe's history. The new designs are expected to enter circulation a few years after the decision, which will be made after the votes have been counted.
