Euro Climbs as ECB Hawkishness Offset by Resilient Dollar
The Euro has seen an uptick in value against the US Dollar as markets expect the European Central Bank to raise interest rates at its September meeting. According to market pricing, there is nearly a 96% probability that the ECB will increase the deposit rate to 2.50%, following comments from Isabel Schnabel.
This hawkish stance by the ECB has provided support for the Euro, which trades around 1.1650 against the US Dollar in Asian dealings on Friday. However, gains are capped by stronger-than-expected US inflation data, which continues to fuel expectations of a Federal Reserve rate hike in December.
The resilience of the US Dollar is also due to the strong inflation figures released this week, reinforcing expectations that the Fed will lift interest rates before year-end. Despite this, market positioning for the September meeting suggests around a 65% likelihood that policymakers will keep rates unchanged, signaling a preference for additional data before committing to further tightening.
The focus is now shifting to the upcoming address by Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh at the annual economic symposium in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Participants are looking for indications about how US policymakers may steer interest rates and broader monetary conditions.
