Euro Fails to Gain Traction Against Pound Ahead of Key Inflation Report
The EUR/GBP exchange rate continues to hover around the mid-0.8500s as the Euro struggles to reclaim the 0.8600 barrier, despite the European Central Bank's recent rate hike on September 10.
The ECB raised its three key rates by 25 basis points, lifting the deposit rate to 2.50%, but this hasn't had a significant impact on the Euro's performance against the Pound.
Meanwhile, the Pound is holding firm despite a softer-than-expected UK jobs report, with claimant count claims rising more than anticipated in August and employment growth slowing over the three months to July.
The key driver for Sterling remains the interest rate gap between the UK and the Eurozone, which continues to favor the Pound. This week's focus will be on Wednesday's UK inflation report, where headline annual inflation is expected to rise to 3.1% from 2.9%, driven by services prices.
A stronger-than-expected inflation reading could keep the Bank of England's hawkish minority in play and give the Pound another reason to hold its ground against the Euro, potentially pushing EUR/GBP back towards the lower end of its range.
