Euro Gains Momentum as Cuba's Informal Currency Market Sees Mixed Signals
Cuba's informal currency market is showing mixed signals as of September 1st. The U.S. dollar remains steady, trading at 678 Cuban pesos (CUP) with buying and selling rates between 675 CUP and 680 CUP. This stability marks the start of September but contradicts the weekly trend, which has seen a 10-peso increase from last week's rate.
Meanwhile, the euro is gaining momentum, trading at 768 CUP with buying and selling rates between 760 CUP and 775 CUP. This represents a 3-peso rise from the previous day's closing price of 765 CUP. On a weekly basis, the euro has surged by 13 pesos from last week's rate of 755 CUP, a 1.7% increase.
The MLC has also experienced a price increase, trading at 467 CUP with buying and selling rates between 451 CUP and 482 CUP. This represents a 3-peso rise from the previous session's closing price of 464 CUP, equivalent to a 0.6% increase.
The official exchange rate from the Central Bank of Cuba (Segment III) remains significantly lower than the practical rates in the informal currency market, set at 636 CUP per dollar and 739 CUP per euro. The gap between the official and informal rates is substantial, with a difference of 42 pesos for the dollar and 29 pesos for the euro.
