Euro Hinges on Inflation Data as Rate Hike Odds Waver

BNY Mellon strategists believe the euro's near-term path is tied to the upcoming euro-area inflation report, which will test market expectations for further European Central Bank (ECB) rate hikes.

The inflation data will be a key catalyst for the single currency, as investors look for clues on whether the ECB will continue its tightening cycle. BNY notes that market pricing of additional rate hikes is sensitive to inflation surprises, and a stronger-than-expected print could reinforce those bets, providing support for the euro.

As of now, money markets are pricing in a certain probability of another rate increase by the ECB, but the exact path remains uncertain. BNY's analysis suggests that the euro's recent rangebound trading reflects this uncertainty, with the currency likely to break out only after the inflation data provides clearer direction.
