Euro Holds Firm Against Pound Amid Oil Price Drop and ECB Hawkishness
The Euro (EUR) has maintained its strength against the British Pound (GBP), trading near three-week highs despite a risk-off sentiment in the market. The EUR is benefiting from a decline in oil prices and the pause in hostilities between the US and Iran, which has eased concerns about inflation. Additionally, the European Central Bank's (ECB) hawkish stance on monetary policy is supporting the common currency.
The Bank of England (BoE) will likely leave its benchmark interest rate unchanged at 3.75% this week, but investors are looking for signals from Governor Bailey that a rate hike is still possible in the last quarter of the year. Economists at ING, however, are skeptical about this possibility, citing the BoE's updated projections showing inflation running close to 3% by the end of the year.
The Pound Sterling has been under pressure due to concerns about the UK government's fiscal policy and the financing for new Prime Minister Andy Burnham's spending pledges. Burnham's announcements have triggered market worries about further strains on public finances, a sensitive issue in the UK after the 2022 fiasco led by Liz Truss.
