Euro Redesign: ECB Unveils Shortlisted Designs and Invites Citizens to Vote
The European Central Bank (ECB) has unveiled ten shortlisted designs for the next generation of euro banknotes. The redesign aims to make the currency more secure, sustainable, and inclusive. Over 8 million Europeans have already participated in the consultation process.
The ECB is inviting citizens across the 21 European Union member states that use the euro to vote on designs spanning the €5 to €200 denominations by September 21, 2026. The Governing Council is expected to select the final winning design by the end of the year.
The ten shortlisted proposals are divided into two distinct themes: 'European culture' and 'Rivers and birds.' The designs feature prominent intellectual and artistic figures, including German composer Ludwig van Beethoven and Polish-French scientist Marie Skłodowska-Curie. Natural motifs include a wallcreeper and a mountain spring on the €5 note, and a kingfisher positioned beside a waterfall on the €10 note.
The new notes will incorporate advanced anti-counterfeiting technologies and utilize more sustainable materials to reduce the Eurosystem's environmental footprint. ECB President Christine Lagarde stated that euro banknotes are 'one of the most tangible expressions of Europe.' The redesign initiative reflects the shared identity and heritage of the European bloc.
