Euro Redesign Pits Culture Against Nature
The European Central Bank is seeking public input on new designs for euro banknotes, the first redesign since their introduction in 2002. The competition pits two themes against each other: cultural figures and nature-inspired designs featuring rivers and birds.
The ECB has received millions of responses to an online survey, with over 26 million views for social media posts introducing the new banknotes. Thousands of alternative suggestions have been submitted, with some critics arguing that neither theme captures the essence of Europe.
Christine Lagarde, the E.U.'s top banker, believes culture promotes values and inclusion, while nature themes symbolize freedom and unity among Europeans. The cultural series features historical European figures like Maria Callas, Beethoven, da Vinci, and Marie Curie, while the nature theme showcases birds in their natural environments.
The redesign aims to make cash harder to counterfeit, environmentally friendly, and more relatable as cashless transactions rise in the 21-nation eurozone. The ECB is urging Europeans to participate in a survey open through September 21st, with Lagarde saying 'Tell us which design you like and why.'
