Euro Rises Against Dollar Amid ECB Hawkishness and Strong Euro Area Data
The euro has been gaining strength against the US dollar due to strong economic indicators from the euro area. The European Central Bank's (ECB) hawkish stance is also supporting the euro, with markets now pricing in more than one 25bp hike by year-end. The ECB remains resolute in addressing inflation risks, which are intensifying.
The July Producer Price Index (PPI) for the euro area came in at 5.8% year-over-year, showing renewed pressure and pushing towards a cycle high of 5.9% from May. This has contributed to increased ECB rate expectations, with nearly one full additional 25bp hike priced by year-end.
Shaun Osborne and Eric Theoret from Scotiabank highlight the importance of inflation data in setting the euro's tone. They note that while final services and composite PMI's indicate modest expansion across the euro area, the hot PPI figures dominate the narrative.
The short-term technicals for EUR/USD are neutral to bullish, with support around 1.1580 and limited resistance before 1.1650. The Relative Strength Index (RSI) has pulled back into the mid-50s, shifting the balance of risk to near-term strength.
