Euro Rises as Investors Bet on Further ECB Rate Hikes
The euro is gaining strength against the U.S. dollar due to market expectations that the European Central Bank will continue its tightening cycle, which includes a likely rate hike in September. The ECB's Governing Council plans to increase the deposit facility rate from 2.25% to 2.5%, with some economists predicting it will reach 3% by mid-2027.
The Eurozone Consumer Price Index rose to 3.3% in August, a three-year high, and GDP growth accelerated to 0.6% in the second quarter of 2026. The ECB wants to avoid a repeat of 2022's sluggish policy responses that led to inflation soaring above 10%, and is concerned about the potential second-round inflationary transmission effect from rising energy prices.
However, some analysts argue that raising the deposit facility rate too high could exacerbate economic difficulties in the Eurozone by suppressing household consumption willingness and investment activities. The ECB must adopt a cautious policy stance to balance these competing factors.
